The Weight of Silence is a haunting novel exploring the disappearance of two young girls on a hot summer morning. Young Calli and Petra are classmates, neighbors and best friends. Petra is outgoing and sweet, Calli is a dreamer and silent- a terrible accident has caused her to silence her voice for years. Their disappearance shocks their community and unveils long buried secrets.

The story weaves between many different narratives: we spend time with Calli's mother and brother, Petra's father, the police officer in charge of the case, and with Calli herself. The slow unraveling of what happened that hot summer morning is taunt and suspenseful, full of sorrowful meditation and heartbreaking realizations.

So funny I laughed out loud, and that doesn't happen much for me with books. It's basically the story of a Swedish Forrest Gump, and his misadventures are hilarious. Suspend disbelief and go with it.

The first novel by Chicagoan cellist Edward Kelsey Moore is a truly satisfying story of the trials and triumphs of three girlfriends. Told mainly from Odette's perspective, she introduces herself by admitting to recent conversations with both her marijuana smoking deceased mother and Eleanor Roosevelt.

While this story follows a predictable path, the colorful characters of Plainfield Indiana keep the laughter fresh and the tears genuine.

Karin Slaughter never disappoints. There are so many reasons to recommend her. I love her timely and intricate plots, her flawed yet always interesting characters and complicated relationships.
