It's accepted that people in low-income, high-crime areas have more health problems overall, but she makes the case for adverse experiences having lasting effects in all demographic groups. If someone poor is sick, it's due to their environment and lack of access to care; but what about someone from a seemingly stable, affluent setting? Their health complaints are treated as purely physical, without looking at root causes in inevitable childhood trauma. Adverse Childhood Experiences do not discriminate, and occur at every income level and in every community. And she has found a way to address ACES and help people heal, through coordinated care, with measurable results. An important read for anyone who works with children in any capacity, as she has found a startling number of children referred to her for ADHD, whose behavior issues are instead directly related to childhood adversity, and who can be treated through counseling, nutrition, mindfulness, and exercise instead of medication. I hope that her screening process and treatment methods for ACES become standard practice with all pediatricians.''
