competencefantasy's Reviews (912)

I like it, I do. It just doesn't feel like there's much there.

I probably read this too fast

One scene I really liked
One scene I hated
One book that just wasn't for me.

Sorry. It's not you book it's me

My first impressions were a little lukewarm. I didn't think the prose did much and thought the worldbuilding was a little trite. That said Hendrix really pulls off the last few hundred pages of the book. So it landed after all. I did think there was some thematic stuff that didn't quite work on, for example the role of medicine or in one cause signing petitions for causes and it's relationship to selling out but oh well.

Listened to the audio book and the cast style recording was great. There were a few finer points of theme that I'm not sure went all the way there but in general a roaring book.

A very readable traditionally styled vampire story. There were a few problems with the conveyance of passage of time near the end of the story and with a few reproduced prejudices (not all) from the original.

Was a fun and quick read. My first superhero comic

Well it's a whole lot more grounded than penal colony I'll give it that.

Man wakes up as bug.

Coping does not happen.

Review is bearing in mind that I was in the mood for an epic fantasy where everyone is traumatized and has parent issues. So this played to exactly what I was looking for at that moment.

Very interesting protagonist

It seemed a little more tell vs showy this time around but I can't deny that this worldbuilding really works for me
