i think this is my favorite of french's books that i've read so far. the mystery itself wasn't her strongest but the rest of the book was such stunning work that i don't even care.  current ranking:

1. faithful place
2. the likeness
3. the secret place
4. in the woods
5. the witch elm

this was goodddd, only complaint is that the conclusions were way less satisfying for either mystery than the narrative and the mysteries themselves

just was not interesting me tbh. was almost a quarter of the way through and felt no attachment to the book, writing was pretty cliche and stale to me, interesting concept but execution just did not compel me

nice spooky atmosphere but felt kinda clunky at times

i felt the quality was stronger in the first half or so than the latter part but still a fascinating exploration of trauma and an excellent little horror novel

i was a little worried this book would disappoint me since it's so inescapably popular, but it quite surpassed my expectations. beautifully written, loved every minute of it.
