Needy Little Things is a propulsive YA mystery with speculative elements. Sariyah can hear people's thoughts, specifically what they need. When she uses this power to help a friend and then said friend disappears, she begins a descent in her mind- questioning if this is more a curse than a gift.
As Sariyah distrusts the police, she works with her friends to discover more about Deja's disappearance. I loved how this used an element of magical realism to tackle critical topics and to approach the classic coming of age dilemma in a different way. This is the kind of YA that will appeal to young and adult readers.

Weird stuff around body sizes and “junk food.”
I only enjoyed Finn’s perspective and they were both pretty unlikable.

Such a Good Mom is one of my top ARC reads of 2024. It was my first book by Julia Spiro and it will not be my last! I loved everything about this fast paced mystery set on Martha's Vineyard with a main character who is a very new mom.
Such a Good Mom is told by Brynn, who is struggling with everything about parenting a newborn. Her husband Ross seems to be pulling away, her mother in law is critical of her parenting, and she feels like she is losing herself completely. Sound familiar? Goodness, yes. (Except the MIL part, mine is a gem.)
So with all of this on her plate, Brynn is shocked by the news of a young woman on the island going missing and her husband is the key suspect. The so much evidence against him, Brynn is rattled but determined to find answers... whatever they may be. Thus she embarks on a journey to learn more about her in laws and the year rounders of the island she calls home.
If you love a quick mystery, stellar exploration of matresence (the many changes that result from becoming a mother), and have vs. have not vacation destination settings, this one delivers. Such a Good Mom was the very well executed merger of so many things I love in books and I hope you'll love it as well!

The Dollhouse Academy is a departure from previous books by Margarita Montimore as her first psychological thriller. This story centers two young women , Ramona and Grace, who sign with an exclusive acting agency that requires them to live and train at their isolated academy. When mysterious notes begin arriving for one of the two, their mental headspaces are driven in opposing directions and their friendship becomes precarious.
Told mostly from the perspective of Ramona, we also read chapters from the diary of an older actress who has been a huge star of the eponymous Dollhouse Academy. Her journal entries are sporadic throughout, with more towards the end, and are perhaps the only thing that kept me reading this circuitous and slow paced book. They were truly the only pages building tangible suspense.
I could really complain about how this book did not work for me, but I'll leave it at this: it was repetitive, slow, and overly long. I think the idea of this story would make an excellent short story or novella. This might work for you if you like stories about the cost of fame and near realistic science fiction.
