(vague-ish review but with very obvious context clues lol)
the first half of the book is good. the web of lies was pretty engaging and i just wanted to continue untangling it. then the twist happens 60% into the book and it's boring? uneventful? it wasn't shocking per se, and i don't think it needed to be in order to keep the momentum going, but from that point on i struggled to keep my interest in the book consistent. i thought there were certain similarities to gone girl before, which i attributed to being a fan of said book, but after we find out what happened i could only laugh lol
i don't have a lot of thoughts on the book tbh, after that i didn't really care (and there was nearly half a book to get through still). i didn't give a fuck about the dad, if anything he didn't suffer enough. everyone else was also mean as fuck to the neurodivergent 9 year old whether they meant to or not, like... she's nine. come on. i said that to myself a lot as i read, whether because other characters were horrible or because i reached a really ridiculous plot point. that's just a child!!!
in conclusion this was a miss. i was under the impression it'd be a huge mystery with a crazy twist i'd never see coming but it was so dull overall. overhyped, sorry.
