It had such a good premise... Then the execution just went downhill. Boring romance, unearned ending.
Better as an audiobook. It's a fine book of essays. Three stars.
I must choose my own joy. Reading a slow, boring book about a handful of men trying to protect damsels in distress is my anathema. DNF at 51%.
More ambitious and longer than the first book; you're in for a ride.
The tone is darker, with a larger focus on the demons and dark magic of this world. Anyone looking for a bit of spooky body horror will be very happy.
There's also a larger focus on the politics of the kingdom, gaining new perspectives and angles to the story.
The heart, and where this story shines, is with the found family that was built in the first book and strengthened here. The bond between our protagonists is precious, entertaining, and fun. Watching them support each other as they grow in this book was a treat.
Thanks to the author for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

A nearly perfect character study and exploration of slow first contact. but, drags on a little too long.
Can Leigh Bardugo keep writing mysterious spooky urban fantasy forever please?
