chloefrizzle's Reviews (993)

Once upon a time, I was ten years old. I was in an unfamiliar public library looking for more books by the author of the Percy Jackson series. I couldn't find the children's section of the library, but I did find this book and check it out.

I remember that it was intriguing, but didn't knock my socks off, and I was not compelled to read the rest of the series.

Not quite enough of an engine in this book. Wallows in its tone without developing the characters or the stakes.

In 2022, I had fun! Here's some of my reading stats:

214 books read:

21% of my reading, I gave 5 stars. About half of that was rereads.
7% of my reading, I gave 1 star. Most of those were DNF's. A good amount of the 2-stars were DNFs, too.
Average star rating I gave = 3.36

I made a reader personality test, called Booktone (just google "Booktone quiz" to take it yourself!). Each book is categorized by which type it fits best! Here is the breakdown of the booktone of each novel I read:

And here is my average star rating for each of those types:

My Booktone tends to the blue, purple, and gray types (character focused, some plot).

The number of pages in each book I read:

The publication year of each book I read:

I calculated a "hype score" for each book, a measure of how many ratings the book has received per days its been published. Here is that score VS my rating, showing that there is no trend towards me especially liking or disliking hyped books.

It's readable and fun. It's also full of plot holes. I didn't feel like the romance was well developed.

It was cool, and had very neat worldbuilding. But after it kept repeating the same note, I grew bored.

I think the nostalgia bait for the original series might have been more effective if I remembered those books.
