chloefrizzle's Reviews (993)

For how controversial this book is for its romance, I was expecting more romance to be in the book.

Super boring.

The worst use of 1st person narration I've ever seen: two narrators that have the same voice and are always together, and we don't get to hear about their inner thoughts or emotions. And the book gives us no indication of when we've switched perspective; I was consistently confused and unmoored.

Utterly delightful. It's got the feeling of an Urban Fantasy novel while still with the setting of high fantasy.

It just drops you into the world, but not because it doesn't want to explain it, but because the book is too busy establishing the fun plot and characters to take time for the irrelevant political factions.

One of the best of the series!

It does Mafia turf war very well. It also does political intrigue wizards very well.

This is the first "written during the pandemic about a pandemic" books I've found that was hopeful (instead of depressing).

This book is blatantly sexist. I'm confused why it has so many positive reviews.

We have handfuls of male characters and *checks notes* two women. One is an obese abusive alcoholic. The other is our "little firecracker" (she's older than the protagonist) who shows up to take off her shirt, tease our protagonist, and give worldbuilding dumps.

Additionally, this book is constantly using default-male language. To describe groups of men and women, it usually just refers to the everyone as "men." Like, in the end of the book, all the men celebrate their victory. Also some women are there to give out random lusty kisses.
