Okay, I didn't love, love this book, but I didn't hate it either. Mostly I just felt frustrated the entire time- which is pretty much how I felt during The Maze Runner as well. There were more questions answered this time but even more new questions introduced. The action was at a higher level which made the book a lot more exciting for me than The Maze Runner. Ultimately in the end I was left think "What the....???" I'll say this for Dashner- he sure knows how to keep people reading. I can't not read the next book because it will drive me nuts to have to many unknowns still out there.
The weird lovey dovey element that Dashner tried to introduce in this book. It felt awkward and misplaced. The interactions between Thomas and Brenda were especially bazaar to me and just didn't fit with the overall mood of the book. The entire time Brenda and Thomas were alone together, I found myself wriggling in my seat and just wishing it was over. What's with kisses just happening out of nowhere? Also, I get that the story is supposed to center around Thomas but I there were so many times when I didn't have a clue what was going on with the rest of the characters or where they were. I think I would have preferred hopping back and forth from one group to the next. There was a lot of "Oh hey, where have you been? Let me hurry and sum up what's been happening with us" kind of thing. It interrupted the natural flow of the book.
The crazy wasteland setting and frightening storms with extreme lightning was an awesome element. The Cranks seemed kin to zombies to me and that kind of freaked me out- especially when Thomas had to stab one of them to stay alive. Picturing Cranks pursuing Thomas in the underground tunnels in the dark definitely gave me the heebie jeebies!
So basically the plot ideas for this book were great and this was an interesting contrast to the first book in the series. There were just a couple elements that felt off to me, but nothing to stop me from reading. I will be reading the next book in the series and looking forward to the prequel which should be available in August 2012. I'm intrigued enough to really want to know what eventually happens to Thomas and his friends.
