I started this series because I saw the anime and was... mostly interested? It wasn't great, but it scratched this little part of my brain that needed yokai and food and comfiness. It's just nice and happy.

I was on the verge of tears all the way through this book- happy tears, sad tears, astonished tears, you name it. It is frothy but dense. The juxtaposition of loneliness and joy is so beautifully displayed. Hands down, one of the best manga or comics I've read. And yes, while I absolutely see myself in all the little quirks of a cat owner and, yes, I hope my cats have inner monologues as happy as little Fukumaru's, I think I could recommend this to anyone and they'd find something to smile about.

Fukumaru is magic. Enemies to friends. Coworkers to friends. Friends to super friends. Cats and pets and love and saying yes to help fill our lives with such joy and open us up to more good things. It's nice to have a peaceful and kind reminder of that.

Uh-oh sexy new guy alert! Just kidding. How cool is it to have characters in a book for teens not immediately jump to jealous conclusions? Again, it's because our mains are older, but still. The trope is old.

Now there's a sexy enby!? Whatever shall our betrothed couple do? Act like adults and deal with the impending attacks from monsters and other nations, of course! Yay maturity!

A good end to decent little series. A happy ending for all involved. It just makes me dream of owning a book cafe, and there are certainly worse dreams to have.

Oh the little romance is really blossoming and there's little wrenches thrown at our protagonist, but nothing crazy. It's so wholesome.

Two volumes in and I can already accept that this whole series will simply by 5 stars all the way down. We get a closer look at Mr. Kanda, his past, and the inescapable transition one goes through when you meet an animal that just resonates with your soul. It's beautiful.

Easily the best book on how to read tarot, accompanying the the greatest deck I own (and I own A LOT). This wasn't just interpretations and spreads (although I must add that every spread was precisely and carefully presented with example readings, which I have never seen before). It was a conversation. It was a treatise. It was a baking lesson with your grandma when you know there aren't many left. This left me THINKING- about the world, about kindness, about hope. Tarot at its core is a reflective art; at its core, this book is a friendly hand to hold so you don't get lost in the lies of that reflection. I can't recommend this enough.

1. Penny Rolle is dope as hell.
2. Do not read before bedtime. Good golly. I'm so angry and depressed and tired, my dreams are going to be an absolute wreck.
3. It is amazing how only 8 years after this was published just how much of the misogyny and racism that was meant to surprise and scandalize is simply every day, right out there in the open patter. I hate it here.

This is a visceral, terrifying curb stomp to the heart. Bitch Planet would be 5 stars were it not for feeling totally disconnected from the first issue of the collected five, but I'm also just a sad little softy reading this at 3am, so don't take my opinion too seriously.
