Police procedurals and urban fantasy go hand in hand. It's probably one of the most common tropes for urban fantasy and one of my favorites. If you think about it, it makes complete sense—these strange new creatures have crawled out into the light of day, and someone needs to be able to make sure they are following the rules. It's a way of evening out the inequality that supernatural abilities bring to the table.
Camille Ellis is an agent for the Earthen Conclave, an organization helping to keep the Fae in line. There are portals that allow the Fae to come over to Earth but the ones that use it are usually killers without a conscience. Camillie is also Fae, which puts her in the perfect position. She's a Gemini, with a heartbreaking back story. Geminis, like the sign, are twins. Their ability is fundamentally to shapeshift with the help of a donor and some of their blood. Simply put, she can mirror that being and their abilities for a short time. In Camille's case, her twin drowned when she was 7 or 8. Geminis have a base form that they shift back to occasionally, with hers being that of her little sister. She can also tell what flavor species someone is simply by touch making her a Conclave asset.

It's rare to have urban fantasy with any original ideas. After all, the genre has been around for decades now. Vampires, shifters, fae...they've all taken their stroll through the pages of many an urban fantasy. Nightmares may be a more unique take. I can only think of one other, Night Terrors by Tim Waggoner. In Night Terrors, the nightmares are allowed to exist as long as they behave, though they are enforced by a paranormal agency made up of dream creatures and their dreamer creators. Nightmare City, however, has a very different take.
After an event called The Surge, suddenly dreamers were finding that their dreams and nightmares manifested in the real world. Chaos and destruction reigned until civilization learned to deal with the shades they created. They founded the Somni Order, an organization established to find ways to police and cope with the constant threat of their nightmares made real.

Told by her husband that their home is being renovated, Annie Cameron boards a small boat with her autistic son and her husband's dementia-touched mother to be ferried to their temporary rental house on Mico Island. Her husband, however, does not come with them claiming to need to stay behind to oversee construction.
It's a beautiful home that awaits them. Columns and picture windows grace the front of the house. A verandah encircles the entire house and on top, a widow's walk where the wife of a sailor could watch and wait for her sea bearing husband to return home. Yet, as neighbor and boatman Mr. Mann tells her, there's no door to the widow's walk. Annie's spirits are buoyed by the stunning house and she is determined to make the best of it — an adventure for them all.
There's something malevolent on the island though.

There's something about abandoned places that are inherently eerie; Amusement parks are one of those places. Maybe it's that our own experiences of those places tell us that they should be filled with boisterous voices and screams of excitement and happiness. Cirque Berserk speeds us away to a carnival that has remained empty since 1989. Those are screams you hear but they are not shouts of enjoyment!

If there were ever a misnomer for a book title, it's Nothing is Strange because in these pages, everything is strange. Twenty short stories grace these pages and I'd love to tell you what they are about, but it's something that would need to be experienced for yourself.

Beyond the Moon is an interesting time travel romance. It's unique in that it's more like a time overlap (the author calls it a timeslip) than true time travel, at least at first. Our heroine first meets Lieutenant Robert Lovett in an abandoned section of the psychiatric hospital that she accidentally finds herself involuntarily admitted to in 2017. Except when she enters his room, she finds herself back in 1917, going back and forth between the two time periods. It's only after falling through the floor of the abandoned wing, that she picks up as Rose, a VAD nurse at a British field hospital in France. Lt. Lovett is sent back to his unit in France to continue fighting and eventually is captured and becomes a German POW.
