The cover initially drew me to The Monster of Selkirk. That's a gorgeous cover! There are so many elements that are revealed on that cover without giving anything away about the story.

An epic coming of age type story, it follows Talis, our MC of obscure origins. Found as a babe in the woods, we follow Talis from her mysterious beginnings into adulthood. She's an outsider, not many friends and despised by her own adopted father. She does have a few close to her though: A cousin who teaches her combat and weaponry, a friend who shows her the art of pickpocketing, and another an initiate at the monastery who helps share written knowledge with her. A motley crew for sure! While the story skips POV frequently, you don't get lost, thankfully, as the breaks are clearly identified. It's not my most favorite writing style as you know, but at least I didn't have to keep going back to figure out where the story was.

Twist of Fate is a second chance romance and you know what that means! That’s right! It’s my favorite romance subgenre to review! Second chance romances just give me all the feels. There’s no worry of “insta-love” and there’s always a great backstory on why it didn’t work out the first time around. I think it satisfies my wish for that “meant-to-be” feeling for two characters to work it out amidst the chaos of their pasts.

This novella follows Daisy and Diego, and of course, their love didn’t work out for them so much back then. Now they are thrown together when Diego’s estranged brother calls him back home to bear witness to the union of his marriage to Tyler. Turns out that Daisy and Rocco have not only stayed in touch, they are great friends, so who else should Rocco turn to for his wedding planning but Daisy. Not only do Daisy and Diego have a battered past that they need to move beyond, so do Diego and his brother. There’s a lot of past hurts and heartache that need to become water under the bridge if any of them can have a future.

A cold night. A frozen river. A night sharing warmth — and more — with a handsome stranger. There’s no time wasted jumping into Glory’s story…or her pants for that matter! We see way more of Glory than I expected to at first. The first four chapters focus on this incident and the stranger. The sex scenes are awkward and unnecessarily detailed IMO. (Liquid sliding out? UTI pillow talk? Ick.) At this point, I was really hoping that Glory Reborn wasn’t going to be one of those books with all style and no substance.

Trust me, I know that part of this is my own shortcomings as a reader. I’m used to the strong heroines of urban fantasy. I want more action with my romance on the side, at least when it comes to paranormal stories. I want a romance that will stand up and fight with its last dying breath. I like my PNR to have teeth and so far Glory Reborn was just gumming me to death.

I picked up Beasts of Babylon on a whim. I'd seen the cover come across the "you may like" page a couple of times and I thought since it was Kindle Unlimited... well, why not? Boy, am I glad I did.

For some reason, I really enjoy the Horror Western (or Weird Western) genre, which is odd because I'm not really a big western person. When it comes to movies though, I'm a huge fan. Bone Tomahawk is one of my favorites, as is Dead Birds and The Burrowers. There's just something about the grit and forlorn landscapes of the primitive western setting combined with the dread of horror. Needless to say, horror westerns are few and far between. And well done novels? Well, almost non-existent.I went into Beasts of Babylon not expecting much and it blew me out of the water.

Last year, I had the privilege to review a book by Hunter Shea called Creature. It broke my heart and put Shea on my favorites list.  To this day that story has stayed with me. When I saw Slash, of course, I jumped at the chance to feel those feelings again!

A Midnight Clear is a collection of six varied stories of dark yuletide cheer. This was a very diverse mix of holiday-themed stories perfect for the season. While they varied in personal ratings, each was well written and matched my desire for a great wintery read. Short story collections are so much fun because the tones and themes can vary greatly from author to author. This perfectly fantastical group of stories did not disappoint!
