Each of the Happy Hour Series so far has seen the girlfriends, Annabelle, Harper, and Sawyer pair up with their perfect mates for their happily ever after. You can read my reviews of Manhattan (here) and Dirty Martini (here) to catch up on what’s happened so far. The downside to these fun, fast reads is that they are over way too quickly!

What I love about these women is that they tell it like it is, but encourage and uplift each other, as true friends should. They are the type of girlfriends that everyone wants to have. I immediately wanted to be meeting at their bar for happy hour with them. They are all very different but have found a common bond that has carried them through as friends for years.

Suzanne St Michelle has an interesting job in New York. You see, she creates replicas of other people’s art for a living. Need a Rembrandt? A Van Gogh? She can do it, which is amazing in itself, but what she’s missing is her own muse, that creative spark that shouts this is what you should be painting! Her best friend has settled in a little town called Credence, Colorado and recommends that a change of scenery might allow her to find her muse! Unfortunately, she’s finding that her muse is more interested in the way those jeans just happen to fit the surly, cowboy next door than painting sunsets. Joshua Grady a.k.a. just Grady is a no-nonsense quiet kind of guy and Suzanne is really crashing his party. She’s loud and over the top and has a tendency to babble uncontrollably.

Altered is such a unique story. I’ve truly never read anything like it. Kitlyn is 58 years old, with a vibrant history of training and riding horse, until an accident and Huntington’s takes that away from her. She’s out walking with her sisters when suddenly the world falls away. She wakes up in another world, in a younger, perfect body, one free of the disease taking her life. This new realm is not like Earth either. Rescued by Rafe, the leader of the Wolf clan, she’s taken back to their home and all is eventually explained to her.

It was such a strange book. Altered has so many indicators of multiple genres. It was almost as if a paranormal romance was having an identity crisis! It has paranormal elements, such as the “real” wolves that the Wolf clan can communicate with and the other clans, such as Cat and Falcon that can do the same with the corresponding animal. It had elements of science fiction, like the parallel worlds and the Alchemics’ genetically altered “Made Ones”. Technology that is doled out by the Alchemics that essentially rule this world. There’s land crusiers like in Star Wards too. It also had a dystopian vibe, given that the women are zapped from their world into Eleuthia to essentially be broodmares and save the diminishing population. Then there were fantasy elements: horses with wings, floating cities, and magic.

Having read A Bad Breed, I jumped at this novel that continues Anne and Gabriel's story. (Read my review of A Bad Breed here). The Necromancer's Bride picks up just where we left off at the end of ABB.

I can't say enough about the world that Kat Ross has created for this series and I couldn't wait to dive back in. While it's set in Victorian times, this series spans the globe. While ABB took us to Romania, TNB takes us south to tropical Bermuda, among many places, but still somehow manages to keep that gothic vibe. I would say this series is very well-traveled. Paris and Brussels are also on the map and even environ is crafted with care.

Having never read anything by the author before, I didn't know what to expect. Given my love for short story collections, I couldn't resist diving into Something in the Water. With a cover that is beautiful, yet simplistic, it gleefully promised a surreal experience. Knowing that I have a soft spot for monsters, I settled in for a good read. What I wasn't expecting was the range of stories and the emotions accompanying them. This collection of 13 tales by Eddie Generous is both emotional and eerie.
