This book is everything ACOTAR only dreams to be, and I am not sorry to say so. It’s Fae fiction at its best, and it’s basically a love song to all things artistic 💚
I loved the protagonist and the descriptions and the courts (!!!!!!!!) and basically everything. Some plot excuses were a bit too unbelievable and the romance didn’t really convince me, but nothing that took too much away from the story.
All-in-all it was an incredibly good read.

I'm not giving any stars because I wouldn't have made it past the second chapter if it weren't for the hype for the entire series. I'll make up my mind after I've read all three books.
It was quite bad, though. Attempted rape, forced oral sex (which IS rape) and physical abuse aren't the best ways to form a healthy relationship. I'm not even going to go into the racist undertones, as people have talked at length about that.
It did get better in the second half, in a "let's pretend what happened before doesn't have any long lasting consequences" way. I'm not that willing to forget, but it might make the reading of books 2 and 3 slightly more tolerable.
EDIT: i've finished the series and i have a question to anyone who loves it: why?

- the political intrigue is better, the romanticising of shit that happened in the first book is NOT
you guys do realise that Pacat made Damen get turned on by his own rape, right? RIGHT???

would you look at that! i've read all three books! so don't yell at me that the series "gets better" if i "push through the first book".
it does not get better. it does get interesting, in the same morbid sense that makes forensic sciences interesting. which is to say it does not get good-interesting.
not even getting into all the problematic shit, i have a bone to pick with the plot. where's all the political intrigue from the previous book? the entire ending was pure, stupid luck. nothing planned. nothing orchestrated. just pure, stupid luck.
look, if i have to read laurent and damen pretend the events of first book are forgivable, the least i ask is a good plot to engage with. not... whatever this is.
oh, and the so-called "abolition of all slavery" that everyone praises? doesn't even happen onscreen. it's literary one line of dialogue, almost like an afterthought.
so much for the series' anti-slavery stance, right? Pacat, your colours are showing.
it's a fast read, though. i'll give you that.
