Super imaginative and adventurous with some spooky moments. I usually love middle grades like this but this was so good - I loved the storytelling and creatures and vivid imagery that was described. It fully emerses you and makes it that more entertaining. If you want a quick and unique read, this is a perfect choice!
I'm sorrrryyy but I hate books that bring up TikTok or Instagram and it's trends because it dates the books so bad and it's super cringe. So when witchtok and grandmacore is brought up in the first 50 pages and our characters have the most boomer response, I was in pain.
I thought this was much better than her first book in this series. I loved Miriam even more in this one and that she FINALLY stood up for herself and told her MIL off. The MIL is so horrible I had to keep telling myself this was a fake character. That aside, I loved the characters, the culture, the yummy treats that were cooked up, and of course our mystery! I thought this one had more meat to it and was more fleshed out, making it a more intricate mystery.
It was just okay. Nothing about it gripped me and nothing about it was too bad, it's just that it was kind of bland for me. It wasn't a long story at all but it felt like forever. It definitely has potential and I just wished it had more pizazz.
There is something so addicting about the way Ling Ma writes. This was gripping, entertaining, and imaginative. I loved the prose and I loved each story, which is a feat itself as I don't typically enjoy books like this. There was an air of uneasiness that made me absolutely devour these stories.
Laurie Cass is easily my favorite cozy author! There is something so fun and addicting about her mysteries, not too cheesy but the right amount of sugary sweet and full of comfort but also plenty of twists and intrigue. This mystery was so fun, from the beginning there was an immediate autumn vibe that set the mood right and the actual mystery itself was captivating.
I had high hopes for this one but it just didn't deliver like I hoped. I was hoping for uber creepy but it missed the mark. There were some freaky elements and there was an uneasy vibe all throughout the story, but it just wasn't scary like I wanted. Although it wasn't as scary as I would've liked, I did enjoy the story and the ending was a little predictable but it was still entertaining.
