I have been DIGGING fantasy series lately and this one does not disappoint. A dramatically painted world, some great romance plot lines, AND all of this clearly about racial justice and feminism? Yes. Please. Book 2 was equally as well written and “keep me up all night” as book 1 which is the testament to a promising series. Looking forward to reading the two novellas and book 3!

This was... an interesting read. Very well researched. It was chosen by a professional organization I belong to for a professional development book club. As someone who is not a parent, parts of this book made for slow reading. But the parts that applied to being a Higher Education professional, and specifically college admissions, were fascinating. I could see myself coming back to this book in the future when I’m ready to become a parent. Lots of great articles, book recommendations, and social/psychological theories to look into if you’re nerdy like me!

Interesting read, very scientific. My therapist suggested this book and did warn me that it’s very much research focused and written for people in the field. If you’ve taken courses is psych or bio you pretty much know what’s going on the whole time, but perhaps not a great read for someone without that background and/or interest.

Well written, haunting, frustrating, heartbreaking, graphic. Every emotion wrapped up in one book. This novel was so, so hard to read but also so, so good. Every part of my body was tense reading this; I could never decide if I wanted to cry, yell, or laugh. This is an important novel. I highly recommend.

If you want a novella with a new fantasy world and an emphasis on the role of race + power in society, this one is just under 100 pages and pretty good! My guess is that between the four books it’ll be about the length of a normal 400-600 page novel. Loving fantasy series with a heavy dose of romance and my feeling is this won’t disappoint. While the first few pages might make it seem otherwise, book one wasn’t smutty! Here’s to exploring a new world and having vampires show just how detrimental racial and monetary hierarchies are to society. Already calling it, but I’m Team Drew all the way.
