WOW wow wow... Could this book possibly be better than The Hate U Give?
hopeful inspiring medium-paced

I love the message of this book, but I wish the author had chosen to write it in present-day rather than when she grew up in the 1970s. I think it would be more impactful for today’s kids if these school, tv, and music references were current.

For some reason, this Brown sisters book did not get me as much as the other two. Seems like the character and romance development was rushed. Could also just be me in this moment in time.

This is a bruitiful masterpiece that I will come back to for a long time. I have so many thoughts and questions and emotions: anger, sadness, frustration... I hope that reading this book urges me to use my anger for good and become a more active participant in fighting social and racial injustice. Thank you thank you thank you to Drs. Kendi and Blain for bringing together this community of 90 brilliant artists to write the history of African America.

I struggled with this one for some reason and picked up and put it down off and on the past few months. It is more sad than most middle grade I have read, and I think I struggled also with the writing. But the authors note at the end put this book in perspective for me and knowing that it was based on her own life caused me to forgive some of the flaws along the way.
