it's a 3 stars and a half! superfun, moving, an interesting kind of noir
This is a complete turn-around from the previous chapter, no more love story, this is a kind of war story (rebellion, DOD, X-Files) i so didn't expect such a change from what i was reading before. Still don't know if this actually convinced me, but i'm ready for the 5th and final installment.
Letto una seconda volta, e c'è del genio in questo Stevenson, che nel 1800 scrive una cosa così avanti sulla duplicità e la molteplicità dell'animo umano
first 3 stories are nice but not marvellous, from the Japanese one to the end they trully are wonderful, and the parallel to Carver is totally worthy. Killing and dying is like looking at Carver's words translated into artwork. Amazing.
I'm in awe of this book. I felt each and every character, Lou, Dawn, Jerry even, Jessie Orcutt and William Orcutt himself, and the Swede of course, mygod. The last few pages, where he was about to break, are stunning.
This example of morality and of facade at the same time is close to the Candide and Dostoevskij's Idiot in some ways. So non-violent as to seem dumb or simple, and so liberal as to be superficial. And yet. All his love for the simple beauty of his like as simple and work-ridden and moral as it was.
The question of morality on the brink of all the changes in history, that '67. When there still was something solid, and then one cannot be sure of his own identity. And we arent'.
This one can stand next to DeLillo, and going straight to my memorable-reads stack.
And to think I was suspicious about him, was I never more mistaken.

it took me ages to finish this book. I can't say I didn't like it at all, but once I lost the hang of it, say I stopped for some days, I couldn't feel any grip at all again.
but reading all daemon and katy's story after all has been quite entertaining

it's much nicer than i thought it was, it's a 3 stars and a half. i didn't like much some points in the plot which i found kind of obvious but generally speaking it was a nice book.
