Cute. But very middling

Heartless Hunter

Kristen Ciccarelli

DID NOT FINISH: 70%

I did not expect the whole plot of the book was going to be “get Rune naked and have sex with her!!!” This is a YA ffs. Rune is dumb and bad at not getting caught like a typical YA, but it’s so overly sexual in a non spicy but just objectifying way it’s INSANE. I felt extremely uncomfortable the whole time. And it’s extremely bloody for a YA, which I didn’t mind but it was mostly just objectification of each other especially Rune as the female lead. Especially when the male main lead purposely makes her feel bad for being “above” his station like she can help it any more than she can. Pathetic man child. One star. No idea why even whole ass adults are raving about this book.

I'm happy to say that the eating disorder-esc thinking, fatphobia, and the misogyny in this one was almost completely gone! I never thought I'd see the day. And that made this actually quite a decent book.

The issues I had with this one involved the love triangle. Mike being the bad guy for doing his job then being treated like a snake for supposedly dating another woman was extremely hypocritical and I'm tired of her not being able to decide when neither option is actually good for her.

The other issue I had is that Hannah is really bad at investigating and almost dies every book.

Otherwise, this was actually pretty cute. I'm pleasantly surprised and hope this trend continues in the other books so I can actually enjoy them!

The Forest Where the Phoenix Sleeps

I had to DNF this book. 2 stars if any unfortunately. The writing was muddy and all over the place, I constantly had to re-read parts to see if I missed something, the stereotype of her best friend Sasha was… concerning… and the “romance” wasn’t there at all until suddenly it was “I love you” despite all the fighting. I’m severely disappointed from all the 5 star reviews. This honestly did not seem professionally written to me, which I feel bad about saying but… it was just too hard to get through.

Generally a really good book! Very cute romance, great magic-y vibes, and interesting story.

I really struggled on whether to rate this 4 stars or 4.5 stars, which is very disappointing because the first book was one of my top books of the year. However, it was mind blowing and amazing,  but went on at LEAST 100 pages too long. Maybe even 150 pages too long. They didn't need to have
Orya almost die SO MANY TIMES only for her to heal in ONE DAY and come back so much stronger somehow. Once or twice sure, but it happened like 4 times in this one singular book and it ate up 50-100 pages each time. I think for the elongated scenes and the almost dying so many times subtract half of a star for me, only because the emotional turmoil this book put me through and the slow burn of it all made me so freaking happy otherwise.
Otherwise, the book was heart wrenching and amazing and I loved every moment of their relationship. I loved the development Orya made and how devoted Raihn is. I love all the side characters, and I loved seeing Vale and Lillith again. Amazing book. I cried multiple times! (out of joy!) And also, severe daddy issues! I get it girl. Man was a terrible father....
