Great start and finish, middle a little dragging and repetitive. Cult timeline actually horrific - Love is portrayed simultaneously as victim and villain and her thoughts processes are truly dark.

Pure dystopian horror. Won't work for a lot of people and whilst I'm glad to have finally read it I'm not sure if I need to ever return to it.

Too many characters, got confusing sometimes with who was who. Felt pretty slow paced and wasn't keeping me truly invested in the story.

As always the narration was impeccable but I enjoyed Richard Armitage's previous book, Geneva, a lot more than this.

Loved when the action ramped up but overall there were too many characters and I spent most of the book not being able to figure out who was who.

But I loved the mermaids/sirens and the havoc wrecked!

4.25*

Picking up immediately after THAT ending for Shot In The Dark, we are immediately dropped into the investigation into Juliet and Gabe’s shooting whilst also looking into case of a missing art student.

It’s sharply written, fast paced and very much a modern take on the police procedural that builds well from Shot In The Dark. I love the mixed media inclusion and the ending again has got me very intrigued. Juliet was at her worst during this book and I can't help but wonder about what she's got planned for Keith (so deserved!)

Definitely read book 1 before diving in so you get to know our very human and very fallible and flawed detectives, especially as so much of this book is tied up with the events and people from that story.

Roll on Book 3!

4.25*

Nightly government mandated blackouts and a fear of the dark don’t make for great bedfellows and for Grace and it’s all made worse by a ‘visitor’ who is getting into her home and leaving terrifying notes and presents.

Who is it, what does he want and how will she get through that along with the blackouts and managing her crumbling marriage? It all makes for an absorbing and engaging story that is part mystery, part domestic thriller, and part social commentary on the impact of government policy.

It's a 'what if' story looking at the possible end results if the cost of living crisis had worsened in the UK and makes for uncomfortable reading, playing on our natural fears of the dark whilst also feeling very family centred with a lot of humanity and empathy, especially the end of life care setting.

As with End of Story, I loved Louise Swanson's writing and plot synopsis and love that we get a creepy, almost horror set up that ends up with very human focused reveals. Some of the characters didn't work for me initially and it took me a little while to get into but as the story ramped it gripped my attention and couldn't stop reading on to see what would come next.

I look forward to what comes next!

Really enjoyed this apocalyptic/doomsday cult YA story.
Despite the subject matter it's not a heavy read at all and Vivian and Harp are loveable leads dealing with a lot of heavy stuff.
