2 stars for the audiobook. I recommended reading the physical book because the first narrator (I believe is the author) just about put me into a slump. The content is great, but I just couldn’t stand how monotone the narration was. I switch to the physical book too late, but when I did I enjoyed it a lot more. I’m a lover of all things sci-fi Afro-futuristic and this book delivered. I enjoyed some stories more than others, but overall I thought they were all pretty good. Definitely gave me Black mirror vibes which I love!
The only thing that I don’t like was some stories went on too long and others felt incomplete. Otherwise, great book with some great queer representation. Will have to pick up the physical book again in the future to maybe have a different experience

“The normal world has no room for exceptions and always quietly eliminates foreign objects”
What a great book! As someone who is neurodivergent and ACE I found myself analyzing every bit of the story and it did not disappoint!
I loved how the author took us on the journey of someone who does not fit into a perfect box of all the societal norms - shining light on norms that we sometimes follow mindlessly. The book opens with a bird dying and while everyone is sad because a living being has died, they processed to pick flowers killing other living beings in this process. This is something our main character doesn’t understand and demonstrates norms we sometimes hold they conflict with one another. There are other moments like this in the book that I enjoyed, but you will have to read it.
I also went and did some research on Japan after reading this book so as to not unfairly rate a book because I don’t understand the culture surrounding it. I learned that convenience stores are a big deal in Japan with many residents visiting 1-2x a day. The author also herself worked at a convenience store for many years!
Overall I really enjoyed it, and I can’t wait to read more from this author!

This was such a cute book and I absolutely loved the main character Joy! This book has both the fake dating and grump x sunshine tropes. I’m not always a fan of fake dating, but I thought it was done well in this book. Not perfect, but better than some others I have read.
As someone who identifies as asexual, I loved being able to not only see asexual Rep but also TWO black individuals who identify on the ace spectrum because yes, asexuality exist on a spectrum.
I’m not usually a romance reader, mostly romance typically follows a predictable plot (as it should), but I wasn’t expecting the romance duo to be what it was, when I picked up this book, so that was a nice surprise.
I will also add the main romance doesn’t really develop until like 70% through the book, so if that is something you don’t like, you might find this book annoying. I thought it made sense to develop later to really drive home the plot.
Overall, I thought this was a very cute book that I could see myself picking up again.

“Loneliness is like starvation, you don’t realize how hungry you are until you begin to eat.”
This book was amazing. This is my second book by Fredrik Backman and it did not disappoint. It’s clear that he is an amazing writer! I felt all the emotions reading this book. He does such a good job of writing characters that illustrate the human condition which makes them very relatable.
I went into this book knowing nothing about it and I’m happy that I did. I didn’t realize how much I needed this book, until the last page. Wonderful book that I will think about for years to come.
