Foundryside

It introduces a disabled secondary character as an object lesson/warning to the protagonist, this character is disabled from mutilation and amputation during previous torture. I’d felt uneasy about how flippantly some topics were handled and then this confirms that my hesitance was well-founded.

The Book of Koli

M.R. Carey

I don’t like the style of the opening narration, something about it doesn’t work for me. I think it’s that Koli is narrating from so far in the future, it makes it feel like being told a rambling story.

The beginning infodumps and backstory were overwhelming, making me wish it either opened with the exciting escape that happened right before the book opens, or that it waited until later on to explain that backstory.

Given that this is pulling from the Tales of a Thousand and One Nights, I like how this blends between having those stories be events that already happened, things happening now, and stories the characters are telling. I generally dislike stories where characters spend a lot of time lying to each other, especially when coupled with disguises, so I wasn't sure if I'd like this one. Unfortunately I was right and I'm not enjoying it, so I'm stopping.

Very visually intense, full of color, too detailed for me.

The Unspoken Name

It has some self mutilation and body horror in a way that's triggering for me.

Starts out with fatphobic comments about a pregnant character before we even learn the main character's name.

Ruined

Starts with a "describe every swordstroke" kind of action scene, has someone pretending to be someone else (not a trope I like) while doing a romance (lying in relationships stresses me out), then lets me know what color the wallpaper and flowers are. Great for someone, but not me.

The Star-Touched Queen

This has a lot of vivid imagery and is a slow, character-driven romance. It's very focused on what's happening in the main character's head and her thoughts and feelings about what's happening. That's not the kind of book I'm looking for, unfortunately.

I don’t like how it’s cheekily referencing 2016 but not doing anything about it. Either ignore it in time travel, make the history even more alternate, or do something.
