All the Light We Cannot See

"There are a thousand metaphors and all of them are inadequate" (page 16).

A thousand metaphors is indeed my impression of this book so far. I want to give this book more of a shot, but it is all just going over my head. I don't think I'm smart enough for this book, and I definitely don't know enough of the references in this book to keep following what's going on.

So, I'm DNFing it. It's not a bad book so far, but maybe I should try again reading this ten years from now when I've built up my literary muscles.

The Count of Monte Cristo

Found it too boring. I was reading via an audiobook and it was really difficult to distinguish who was talking. Maybe I'll try again some day.

I just didn't feel motivated to read it. Maybe I'll finish it some other time.

Twilight Territory

It was okay and I was enjoying it until I got to the part where there's an inappropriate relationship (described in too much detai) between an adult man and an underage girl. Icky that it's just casually in a book like this. DNF.

Too much too fast. The romance seemed kinda hollow.

The Common Rule: Habits of Purpose for an Age of Distraction

It has an interesting point but it all just seems to unattainable and like it was written for a prototypical well-off white nuclear family. It felt like it wasn't for me and all of my family and all of our neurodivergency, disabilities, and complications. The writing doesn't capture my experience and takes a lot for granted. I also didn't like how it had lots of instruction for Christians and used a lot to explain things about God, but it didn't really quote scripture. All in all, I can see what it was going for, but it stressed me out to read it, so I DNF'd it.

It might have something to do with the fact that I couldn't get past the whisper-like voice of the audiobook reader or the slowness if the story, but something about this book felt uncomfortable to me. I agree with some other reviewers that I don't like how she talks about students who don't live up to her expectations. There was a certain magical essence to the lab work that she captured and beautifully shared with the readers, but my enjoyment of those components of the story were overshadowed by my discomfort.

I can't quite put my finger on what it was that made me uncomfortable. The narration reminded me a bit of classmates who looked down on those who didn't love spending 80 hours per week on the kind of class work they loved to do. I'll admit that it's possible I'm projecting some of my own insecurities onto the author, but either way, it just wasn't a book I enjoyed reading, and I just couldn't get into it.

I enjoyed the rich character development and the romance, but it just ended up being too graphic for my comfort.

It just didn't draw me in. It was too childish too.
