Been a while since I've enjoyed a YA, but this book delivered (and then some) the worldbu9lding and complex storyline was spot on. I loved the references to the struggles of being a young black woman and these tied in nicely to the storyline given the setting. Definitely going to finish the trilogy.

I'm shocked that people are raving about this book. I was excited to read this and didn't DNF through sheer determination to discover the plot twist everyone has mentioned.
For me the story felt disjointed with random elements thrown in that had little to no explanation. Things like world building and the magical system were only explained with miniscule detail, yet other more mundane parts that appeared to have no particular bearing on the plot was dragged out imo.
With the exception of the language and some of the content it felt like I was reading a YA.
Not trying to yuck anybody's yum, but this did not hit the mark for me.
