Firekeeper’s Daughter is the riveting story of Daunis Fontaine, who witnesses a friend’s horrifying murder in her community. Highly knowledgeable about chemistry and traditional medicines, Daunis is convinced to help the FBI investigate a deadly drug linked to her friend’s murder. She is soon drawn into a web of players with conflicting and unclear motives: from the FBI to deeply-respected tribe members. Daunis must work together with Jamie Johnson, a young undercover officer, to seek justice for her friend and find the person behind the new drug before more deaths occur.

Absolutely stunning. I literally could not put it down after a certain point! Firekeeper’s Daughter is filled with vivid descriptions, memorable characters, and packed with details about Ojibwe culture and language. Boulley interlaces important truths about identity, the reality of violence against women, and pulls the tale together with accomplished skill. The pacing is excellent; I always felt a sense of deep urgency woven through the pages as Daunis tracks the culprit and the deaths continue. I also found myself completely shocked by the twists and bone-chilling reveals! The sub-plots and clues all come together in a fast-paced and bittersweet conclusion. Firekeeper’s Daughter made me cry, scream, and laugh. I can’t wait to see what Angeline Boulley writes next and I highly recommend you check out Firekeeper’s Daughter!

Do check the TWs, as this is heavy and important content. Any questions, please feel free to ask me! In my opinion, the content is handled well and reflects the realities of the world we live in.

Pride and Premeditation is the gripping story of Elizabeth Bennet, a would-be law student hoping to apprentice with her father. To do so, Lizzie must find and solve a case on her own. When a murder occurs, Lizzie is eager to chase down every lead. As she attempts to help the wrongfully accused Mr. Bingley, Mr. Bingley’s actual legal representation is constantly getting in her way. Lizzie hunts for answers and it soon becomes clear that a killer is roaming the streets. However, Lizzie refuses to let the snobby Mr. Darcy or a murderer stand in the way of proving her legal prowess to her father once and for all.

Pride and Prejudice is one of my absolute favorite stories, so I’m always excited to check out a new retelling or take on it. I loved that while romance is an element of the story, Lizzie always stays true to her goals and beliefs. Regardless of the chaos surrounding her, Lizzie fiercely fights against discrimination and never gives up her search for the truth. There are plenty of obstacles ranging from reluctant witnesses, misleading clues, and sexism. I appreciated the clever way that familiar characters are re-imagined. It’s clear that the author has an immense love for the original story and honors that while putting her own murderous twist on the classic tale. I’m looking forward to seeing the next Jane Austen mystery combination from Tirzah Price.
