Mission One: the Vice Principal Problem: The Blue Stars Series
Kekla Magoon, Cynthia Leitich Smith
Super cute romance about two high-powered and successful people who want to be together but don't know how to make it work while not compromising their respective careers and very different personalities. There were some pacing issues in the beginning, but overall, not a bad book or a bad ending. Also, this is super funny, and features great side characters who feel like they could easily be your best friend.
Solid, steamy romance. Rebekah Weatherspoon is an excellent writer, and this is the second novel of hers that I've read. I will definitely be continuing on through her backlist and keeping my eye out for more books she publishes in the future.
Alyssa Cole packs SO MUCH into this fast-paced thriller whilst still making it a well-rounded, fully fleshed out, and, at moments, hilarious and devastating story. The overall structure keeps readers on their toes and adds to the same sense of uncertainty and uneasiness that Sydney deals with throughout the book. This book has dual-perspectives in the 1st person, and it was always so clear whose perspective you’re reading from. The history of Brooklyn and gentrification is expertly woven in without being info-dumpy and provides a rich and relevant backdrop to our story. Cole’s writing is descriptive without being pedantic, and makes it incredibly easy to imagine exactly what this neighborhood and these characters look like. It is chock full of moments that make you want to bark with laughter, scream from frustration, sob, or all three at the same time. Some of the themes present are: how the disappearances of Black folk are often ignored or seen as “normal”; gentrification and its place in White Supremacy; and, my personal favorite, the role of the entitled liberal White millennial. I LOVED THIS BOOK. It has automatically become one of my favorite thrillers, and I really REALLY hope Alyssa Cole writes another thriller (and continues the romance, of course lol) because WOW.
