I’m absolutely ENTHRALLED by this novella. UNTETHERED SKY features straight-forward writing that effortlessly immerses you into the world. It’s ominous and foreboding; we, as readers, are given hints that bad things are on the horizon, and this drizzling of mystery keeps you reading and simultaneously satisfied. Believe it or not, this is my first introduction to Fonda Lee’s writing (trust me, Jade City is GLARING at me from across the room as I write this 😂), and now I’m even more looking forward to eventually reading her acclaimed series. I’m excited (and hope) to see Fonda Lee craft more novellas; she certain has a knack for crafting succinct and measuredly paced stories that are satisfying and stoic.
Taj McCoy does it again! She's an expert at crafting steamy romances that also focus on heroines trying to grow and make sure they themselves are stable. The love triangle in this is well-structured, and the grumpy x sunshine trope is perfect. I'm really looking forward to Taj McCoy's next work.
I appreciated Alejandra's journey with her depression and feelings of postpartum guilt; her journey is not linear or neat or tidy. THE HAUNTING OF ALEJANDRA explores the complicated bond between mother and children and uses the idea of haunting as a symbol for generational trauma and inherited mental health patterns, as well as a representation of Alejandra's uneven marriage. The interludes of other women/mothers in Alejandra's line was very smartly utilized and helped keep the quick pace of the main narrative. This horror novel highlights the importance of community between women, both blood and found. Looking forward to more novels by this author.
