i had hopes for this one to be this funny entertaining good times read with the spin on “traditional” romance roles (woman is the protector and all that).
sadly this wasn’t it for me. in all ways possible.
the behavior of the characters was so juvenile!
at one point in the book FMC stands in the office of her boss and screams that one of her co-workers can’t do something because that person is her nemesis…. excuse me?
let alone the behavior of how she believes that doing her job is… too much to ask?
i am sorry but if your a personal bodyguard for someone strictly paid to be there and make sure that person is save i wouldn’t expect it to be an abnormality for the bodyguard to have to move either near or into the place of the person they are protecting? especially if they are supposed to keep it quiet that the bodyguard is a bodyguard? why would you throw a fit if that is your job?! and one she could have just as easily not taken if she really didn’t want it?
than how she dealt with a bad breakup and i am sorry but if a guy breaks up with you right after your only parent dies… he’s an ass and does not deserve any kind of … well anything. that’s all you need to know! and if he is than an regular and known horrible person, talks down to you and makes your professional life harder? that should be the rest of any and all good thought towards that person.
but apparently not?
so that felt entire plot point felt completely unrealistic and strange to me.
the boss of the bodyguard firm also felt like one of those school project leaders that feels it’s their provocative to make it as difficult as possible for everyone around them and hold something over everyone (in this case a a promotion) that he keeps reminding everyone that if they don’t do what he wants and how he wants it to be done they are out of the running no matter how great their track record is (while at the same time ignoring the horrible behavior of the guy?). that entire thing felt so strange and read like something written by a middle schooler who has no idea what actual work is actually like.
and not because a boss that makes it difficult for everyone is realistic (it is sadly) but just how he did it all and how he behaved…. it felt unrealistic and childish.
the entire FMC and her best friend situation- because what?! what was that and was that necessary and why? and let’s just leave it at that.
the MMC was better. don’t get me wrong jack wasn’t the supposed dreamboat i hoped he turned out for a book that kept describing him as not only two times winner of the sexist man alive but also a very popular movie star. he lacked a personality in the book that made all that believable to and for me.
he read like a typical guy not especially charismatic or charming or anything special.
and while i loved that the main character is just a very normal looking woman i disliked how often it was pointed out and basically said that she’s not pretty enough because she just the average. mhm.
also didn’t love the horrible portray of woman against woman in this. especially because it’s a book written by a woman and i expect better. i don’t want to read purposefully hurtful and harmful things being done by woman against woman when it’s completely unnecessary and just a very small section of the book that could have been done differently and better.
all in all the characters for me felt more like young teenagers in their behavior the way they treated each other and how the managed situations.
i assume i just didn’t have the right humor for the book to be a good fit for me?
and all those moments where i felt like i wanted to shake the characters and make them more realistic and act their age and behavior appropriate to the situation was supposed to be funny and humorous but because that’s not my kind of humor it just didn’t work for me.
i hope?
either way didn’t work for me and i can’t say i enjoyed it overly much.
the idea was way better than what i got and it ended up a disappointment for me.
