Over 100 pages and it's just Pride and Prejudice but with characterless sisters that I couldn't give two figs about. Only the tiniest hint of anything haunting or witchy coming from the youngest sibling and they keep sending her to bed! Just a bit bored tbh.

I mean, I knew it was 5 stars when I was balling my eyes out in the first chapter. It's been a journey! An antagonist worse than Joffrey in GoT had me absolutely stressed with all the injustice. Those medieval times just weren't so great - a constantly evolving system. I couldn't put it down, but equally I was afraid to keep reading as I didn't want things to keep happening to my pals. An incredible book.

I loved the vibe of this book! 😍 Crimson Peak meets Poe. Absolute gothic heaven. It's a retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher so it doesn't have a surprising conclusion, but the horror elements are so visceral and nightmarish. I was in too deep by the time my root phobia checked in. *Shudder* Kingfisher's writing is gorgeous too. Like, absolutely stunning! I can't wait to read more by this author.

Starting to feel Cooke's books have such great premises but aren't executed in a satisfying way. I don't know if the publishers are pushing these books out too fast or what, but it's becoming standard now when I pick up one of her books that it feels rushed to a conclusion, and full of continuity errors/sentence and spelling errors. It's jarring. Despite that, the premise for this was really interesting. But eventually I found the links didn't really have much real impact to the outcome of the story, and I found it reminded me way too much of The Lighthouse Witches which was way better. The idea of the book that can't be destroyed and keeps coming back would have made for such a terrifying story. But it ended up being a side plot to a divorce and some heart surgery. I didn't even vibe with the historical point of view with this one unfortunately.
