Why have I never heard of this book before now?....

This is a magical realism novel about a boy named Tony who is growing up in New Mexico. It centers around his relationship with Ultima, a Medicine Woman, his family life, friendships, bullies, and his parents expectations and hopes for him. His mother wants him to become a Priest, his father does not.

It follows him on his journey of a couple years and we see him witness deaths, violence, and juggle with religion as he believes in God and goes to Catholic School, but starts questioning why God continues to let these bad things happen. There is Hispanic influence woven through the book as well as he uses Spanish in certain areas of dialogue and incorporates cultural elements.

This was such a well written own voices novel that while is a work of fiction, pulls from Rudolfo's life. This was such a great and can't wait to share it with others.

TRIGGER WARNING: This deals with hard hitting themes like PTSD, Death, Murder, Faith.
