Incendiary is the first book in the young adult fantasy series called, Hollow Crown, by Zoraida Córdova. This is the first book I have read from this author and I did enjoy it. I am looking forward to continuing on in the series, but I did have a few things that kept Incendiary from being a 5 star read for me.
First, let's start with the aspects of the story that I really enjoyed. I liked the main character, Ren a lot. She was the saving grace for me in the story because I was ultimately really invested in what was going to happen to her. I was also really interested in the magic present in this world. Not everyone has magic, and those that do are outcasts. They are called Moria, and Ren is even rare among magic wielders because she possesses a very rare form of magic. She can steal memories from people. Steal, not share. When Ren gets her hands on someone, she rips the memory from their head and makes it her own. Meaning the original bearer of the memory, no longer remembers it. This was such a unique power. I have never seen a power described this way, and it was fascinating. There are all kinds of consequences for Ren, both physical and moral. Ren's own memories are shrouded in a fog the more she crowds her head with other's memories. Learning about the different forms of magic was my favorite aspect of the story.
I also loved diving into some of the secrets of Ren's past. There are many characters that we encounter in Incendiary. Some I liked, some I didn't and some I was very indifferent to. I don't want to go into which fall into which categories for a few reasons. One, I think I may be in the minority with which characters I didn't like very much and also I don't want to spoil too much of the plot of the story. But I did not like everyone I think we are "supposed" to like as the reader.
My least favorite aspect of the story was the rebellion aspect. At the start of the book, the characters are painted as very one-dimensional good or bad, which I never really enjoy. I find the shades of grey much more interesting to play with. I was also very confused at the start of the story. I felt like we were dumped in the middle of a fierce rebellion and I didn't really have a lot of context for what was going on. I wanted to get to the part of the story where Ren was at court, and it felt like it took too long to get there. I also felt like the characters, other than Ren and at times a few other characters, were a bit one-note and fell a bit flat to me. I didn't love many of the character, but my fierce love for Ren kept me going and kept me enjoying the book. She is the reason that I want to continue on with this series. I have a feeling that the second book is going to be even better than the first now that the groundwork has been laid. Incendiary had a rough start for me, but it got much better as it went on. I ended up enjoying Incendiary and I am interesting in continuing on with the sequel. If you are a fan of YA fantasies featuring interesting magic, rebellions, secrets and court politics, Incendiary may be a great book for you to check out.

Batter of Wits is the fifth book in the contemporary romance, Donner Bakery series by author Karla Sorensen. It is also the 22nd book in the Green Valley Universe from Smarty Pants romance. If you are new to Smartypants romance, it is a publishing line with books by several different authors, writing stories set in one of Penny Reid's universes. Many of the stories feature characters in and around the town of Green Valley. (The Winston Brothers series) I am such a big fan of this series, and if it seems intimidating, don't worry! The books can all be read as standalones, and you don't have to read any of Penny's original books to understand the world. (though you should read all of he books because she is one of my very favorite romance authors) It is perfect for new fans and old fans because we get all new story lines and characters, but we get to see plenty of character crossover.
I have missed a couple of books in the Donner Bakery series, but I really enjoyed Karla Sorenson's first book, so I knew I couldn't miss another book featuring the Buchanan family curse. Grace's family has an interesting curse placed upon them. Each of the men in his family are cursed with falling in love at first sight with the woman they are meant to be with, and then never loving another woman for the rest of their life. Grace, not being a man, gets an interesting twist on how the family curse applies to her. Oh no, she does not get to escape it. The moment Grace lays eyes on Tucker, she hates him on the spot. As soon as I saw this would be an enemies to lovers trope, I was even more sold.
I loved Grace and Tucker. I can't wait to read more books from Karla. Her sweet romance really hit the spot for me. Their story was a lot of fun and brought a big smile to my face. Even with all the hating going on, I loved the way Grace and Tucker complimented each other. They both truly seemed to "get" the other person, which is always something I love seeing in a couple. My only complaint is that there wasn't a big connection to the bakery, rather the connection here was with the Buchanan family. Levi Buchanan's story was very closely linked to the bakery and here we are linked through him. Not a big deal, but it is something I wanted to point out. Overall, if you are the in mood for a really cute, sweet and satisfying enemies to lovers romance, Batter of Wits is a great book for you to pick up, as are any of the Green Valley Universe reads. I have been enjoying them all! Bring on more Smartypants Romance!

Tate’s Tale is the first book in the adult mythology based fantasy series, Sexy Sins Retreat by Lilith Darville. This book is also a reverse harem and is pretty steamy, so it is not for a younger audience. Overall, I enjoyed this book and I have already started to continue on with the series. It is a series that is a super quick read, lots of fun and is addictive. but it got off to a rocky start for me. I felt like the start of the story was too rushed and kind of confusing, but after the first few chapters, I put the start aside and quickly fell into the story. This was a book, and a series, that got better as it went on.
In Tate’s Tale, we meet our main character Tate as she is being pulled from her hospital room to some kind of in between world. She is told that she needs to fix some problem at an other-world academy- the Sexy Sins retreat. They have been having an incubi/sucubi problem and they are in desperate need of some administrative help. The reader quickly learns that this academy is run by the gods of greek mythology, and you all know by now that I love a book featuring greek gods. In this world there are also examiners, whose job it is to help souls ascension to the Underworld. They are assigned to Tate to help her get situated as headmistress of the academy, and they are also her destined mates. But they can’t know that they are each other’s mates. This aspect of the story bugged me. I didn’t really understand why they had to be cloaked from one another, and it never really made sense to me. But be that as it may, they were clocked so upon first glance they would not be able to recognize the other person as their mate. Fated Mates is always a hit trope for me, and this was no exception. I loved the guys and their interaction with Tate.
There was not too much incubi/sucubi interaction in this book. It served more of the setting the groundwork for the next books purpose, and it did a good job at that. I am interested in seeing where the series is going to go. Overall, this book was a lot of fun once I got past the first few chapters. If you are a fan of mythology fantasies and paranormal romances, and if you enjoy them on the steamier side, this will be the perfect series for you. The books are just over 200 pages, so you can breeze through them quickly and binge read all four books in no time. That is what I am currently in the middle of, and I am really enjoying myself. They are a lot of fun.

By the Book is a young adult contemporary romance standalone by Amanda Sellet. I loved this fun, quirky romance story that is just as much about friendships as it was about the ultimate romance. I loved the cast of characters, I love the storyline and I loved the writing in this novel. I can't wait to read more from Amanda Sellet, and even though this book works perfectly well as a standalone, I would love to see romances for our main characters friends- Arden, Terry and Lydia.
In By the Book, we meet out main character Mary as she enters public high school as a sophomore for the first time. Both of her parents are professors at their town's local college and Mary was in the college's experimental schooling program from kindergarten - ninth grade. But when the school does not get funding for the next year, Mary has to move over to the public high school. I hated that her parents waited until the week before school started to tell her when they knew for months. In fact, her parents were my least favorite aspect of the story. They seemed completely self absorbed in themselves and their fields of study and not interested in being actual parents. And beyond that, when Mary started making new friends (who were fabulous friends) her parents acted like it was a bad thing. (more on this later) Mary goes to school on the first day in search of her friend from her last school, only to be completely and rudely snubbed by her at lunch. But good riddance to her because later that same day Mary meets Arden Terry and Lydia when they come in to a bookstore after school, and they become fast friends.
I loved the friendship between Mary and the the three girls. They seemed like much more genuine friends than Anjuli did from her previous school, and I enjoyed how much of the book was focused on their hangouts. Don't get me wrong- I loved the romance as well, but the friendship aspect was just as sweet. They took Mary under their wings, determined to give her all of the typical high school experiences, and Mary brought her vast knowledge of classic novels to the group. I thought it was hilarious to watch her compare modern high school guys to classic rogue characters from her books. Overall, once you get past the family that didn't really ever seem to be interested in getting to know who Mary actually was, the story was super cute. I loved the friendship and the romance was swoony and fantastic. I am not going to say too much about it because I don't want to give anything away, but it was heartwarming and a bit predictable in the best way. If you are looking for a fun story about high school friendships and high school romance with a quirky book nerd spin, By the Book is a must read. I loved it and I think you will too!

How to Quit Your Crush is a standalone young adult contemporary romance by Amy Fellner Dominy. It is set in the same world as her YA contemporary romance, Announcing Trouble. I really enjoyed Announcing Trouble and was super excited to dive back into this world to get Mai and Anthony’s story. But don’t worry- if you are new to this world, you don’t need to read Announcing Trouble first to be able to enjoy How to Quit Your Crush. And I think I enjoyed this one a little more than Announcing Trouble (though it was close!)
Mai and Anthony were characters I wanted to know more about after I finished Announcing Trouble and I was super excited when I heard they would be getting their own story. This was a classic case of opposites attracting. However; with Mai and Anthony they both admit to their crush, but they want to get over the other one. Insert one genius (??) plan to try and out “bad-date” each other. What follows is a super cute, completely hilarious romp over a series of bad and even worse bad dates. I absolutely loved the two of them together. They are so opposite in many ways, but they still have plenty of levels and topics to connect on.
How to quit your Crush is pure fun, perfect for spring and summertime! I loved the banter that Mai and Anthony share, but there are plenty of genuine warm and fuzzy heartfelt moments that made me really connect with each of them. Watching them try to decide they were truly over the other made me smile and shake my head several times, and seeing some of the things they would do just to be near each other had me rooting for these two hard core. If you are looking for a cute, funny romance How to Quit Your Crush is a winner! I loved this book!

Carpentry and Cocktails is the fifth book in the contemporary romance, Green Valley Library series by author Nora Everly. It is also the 23rd book in the Green Valley Universe from Smarty Pants romance. I have missed the previous books in the Green Valley Library series, but I decided to put my reading where my mouth is. I always spout that because the books are all standalones that you can jump in and read the books in any order, but I am typically a very "read the books in order" reader. But this summary really caught my attention so I wanted to give it a go. And I am so glad that I did because Carpentry and Cocktails may be my favorite book that I have read in all of the Green Valley world books! I loved it so much! It was the perfect romance read. And it has made me really want to pick up the previous four books in the Green Valley Library series.
In Carpentry and Cocktails we meet Everett and Willa. The book is told in dual narrative between the two of them, and after a bit of snooping I have found that there story is tied into this series through Everett's brother Wyatt (and good friend of Willa) and Sabrina, who is Willa's best friend. Everett has had a crush on Willa ever since she moved in to his basement apartment. Not only did I love Everett because he is sweet and a huge nerd, but I also appreciated that he liked Willa right away and he knew it. He was patient but at the same time made his affection for her known and once he saw that she liked him back he was unwavering in his support with her. I love how protective and steady he is. Everett is total book boyfriend material. Willa has family drama and ex husband drama, which are both very real issues in her life, but overall this book felt very romance centric, and because of that it was a total feel good read for me. There wasn't much slow burn here (most of the slow burn attraction happened before the story started, so it wasn't insta love but it all happened very fast from the readers perspective. However; it worked very well for story progression. I loved Willa and Everett's story. If you are the in mood for a really smoldering, sweet and heartwarming romance, featuring a protective and hot nerd, you need to check out Carpentry and Cocktails. This is a book I fell in love with hardcore. I loved this story and I think you will too.

The Rival Roomies is a new adult/adult contemporary romance and is also the third book in the Rooftop Crew series by author duo Piper Rayne. Each of the books in the Rooftop Crew can be read as standalones. Rival Roomies is the first book in the series that I have read, but I enjoyed it so much that I want to go read the first two books as well. I love that this is focused on a group of close friends. Rival Roomies was a fun romance from start to finish. I enjoyed reading about Dylan and Rian.
Rival Roomies is dual in dual narrative switching between our main characters Dylan and Rian. This is my favorite narration style, particularly for contemporary romances. I love getting a peek into the guys state of mind. Here Dylan and Rian have had crushes on each other for a while, but they each have different reasons for not wanting to act on their crush. Rian is scared that Dylan doesn't like her back because she sees him as out of her league. Dylan loves his friend group and doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize his friendships, because they are the closest thing to family that he has. When a friend turned rival shows up to town and ends up rooming with Rian, Dylan leaves his apartment across the hall to live with them as well to "save" Rian from Jax's bad boy ways. And the rest is history.
I loved Rian's job. She writes math equations for grade school textbooks. I know it is not her number one passion in life, but I loved that it was not a very run of the mill job. She is also a killer baker, which she enjoyed much more than math equations. Dylan and Rian are adorable together. They are wonderful friends to one another, which is always a great foundation for a romantic relationship. Not to mention there is plenty of delicious tension between them for most of the story, which I always enjoy.
If you are a fan of forced roommate romances, or friends to more then I think Rival Roomies is going to be a fun romantic romp that you will devour. I read this book in one night and I thoroughly enjoyed Rian and Dylan's story. I have seen a few other reviews, and it looks like Dylan is a bit of a fan favorite with readers of this series, and I can totally see why. I think I want to see Jax's story next. I really liked him!

Note: This is the last book in a series that must be read in order. If you are new to the series, you can check out:
my review of book one, Realm of Knights HERE
my review of book two, Shadow Knights HERE
Hidden Knights is a young adult fantasy book and is the third book of the Knights of the Realm series by author Jennifer Anne Davis. By now, you all know how much I love Jennifer Anne Davis. Her Reign of Secrets series is one of my favorite fantasy series, and then book one in this series, Realm of Knights blew everything out of the water. This is one of my favorite fantasy series ever. It has everything I love in fantasy, great twists and turns, a fascinating world structure, plenty of action and plenty of swoony romance. I am so sad that the series is now completed, but if you are new to the series, this is the perfect time to grab all three books and read them back to back to back. I loved the Knights of Realm series, and I think you will too.
Reid, our main character, is one kick butt woman. I love her so much! Reid, Ackley, Gordon and Dexter are all back and ready for action in Hidden Knights. This book picks up after the events of book two and we are right in the middle of a burgeoning war. The plot of Hidden Knights was non stop action. I honestly can't even believe how much Jennifer Anne Davis squeezed into this book, and I loved every second of it. There are so many characters and layers to the story that this series was a joy to read. I love how detailed the characters, world and plot were.
If you know me, then you know a fantasy is great in my book, but a fantasy with a heavy romance element is top notch. And Jennifer Anne Davis does some of the best swoony romances. I love Dexter so much! I knew from the moment I met him that he was going to be a slow burn hero that I would fall in love with, and I was totally right. He is so perfect for Reid, and the romance that has been simmering for most of the series really picked up a notch in this book. (much to my delight)
If you are a fan of fantasy like I am, this series is a must read. As are all of Jennifer's books. She is one of my favorite fantasy authors because she keeps me on my toes so much. In a way that few authors can, she has me flipping pages not only because the story is addictively good, but because I have no idea where it will go next. And that is so darn refreshing, I can't even tell you how much I love her novels. She is in a class of her own when it comes to writing great fantasy. my review of book one, Realm of Knights HERE
my review of book two, Shadow Knights HERE
Hidden Knights is a young adult fantasy book and is the third book of the Knights of the Realm series by author Jennifer Anne Davis.
If you have never read a book by Jennifer Anne Davis, you are really missing out. Pick any of her series and start reading! I think Realm of Knights is a great book for new readers to fall in love with. You will become just as hooked as I am. Read this series now! You can thank me later. :)
