Good young adult fantasy!

This was interesting and kept me interested throughout, although I feel like I'm entering a world I should already have read about so I have perhaps read these books in the wrong order. Took me a long time to get me head around the courts and fae creatures.

A very difficult read

This is a challenging book to rate to be honest. It was interesting and the story gripped me but I would not say it was enjoyable. I spent a good deal of time Googling things, translating phrases and had to keep a character key for the first 40% or so of the book.

The structure of the narrative is unusual and contains no markers for dialogue, so until you are used to that it is a little confusing.

The book also dealt with many, many challenging issues and moments that were unpleasant to experience with the characters.

Having said that, the book was emotional, the language was beautiful and the relationships and depth of feelings and internal monologues for some characters as well as the structure was enchanting, and I did always want to find out how things ended.

Easy to read but heavy!

This novel takes you on a journey through the psychology of Antara- and what a journey it is. She and her mother have both had multiple incidents that could cause trauma based mental health problems in their lives, and this explores that in a sparky, interesting but also damaged narrative.

Stunning

This book is not one I would usually pick, but I was not disappointed.

The setting is absolutely stunning, the Scottish forests are depicted as both mystical and unforgiving and the backdrop of gloomy damp cottages and dark rural roads gives this book a chilling vibe.

Something I particularly enjoy about this story is the fact that the author doesn't over narrate. Characteristics are explained just the right amount and plot holes are covered just enough so the reader doesn't question them.

This was the perfect Halloween read without being too scary.

Full of witchcraft, potions evocative imagery and compelling characters this book was a pleasant afternoon read.

Outstanding

Absolutely compelled from the moment I started to read. Adunni is a soul who I hope never leaves me - not sure I have ever formed a bond so quickly with a character. The narrative form of this was pure perfection. Contender for my read of the year.
