This is a very dark and controversal yet extremely compelling story not written for fainthearted readers.
A word of caution for those willing to give it a chance - take not of all the trigger warnings and take them seriously!
Earthlings is heartbreaking yet funny, bizarre and weird at times, it's a story about "life dismorphia" and people who are stuck on the outside and so alienated from life and societal norms that they have no other choice but to consider themselves as "aliens".
In a hyperbolic way it questions a person's position and role in a society and the consequences of not fitting in from an early childhood and adulthood. It questions what it means to be an adult and how willing adults are to turn the other way whenever something treatens to shatter their views of a perfect family and what life is supposed to be like.
The second half of the book takes a massive tone shift ending the book in an unexpected way, changing the genre to horror more than any other. Yet it still stays true to the overall themes.
This is definitely one of my top reads this year and maybe even an all time favorite.
Bravo! Sayaka Murata does it again!

I had high hopes for this book because at one point it was everywhere on bookstagram, YouTube and other social media.
I should've known better.
The book itself is not so bad if you're looking for a light forgettable read that doesn't take too much of your time or brain cells to understand the plot. However the writing style is very poor and at times very cringey and it reads almost like a fan fiction. The premise had potential but the execution was less than.
Overall it's extremely overhyped and it doesn't deserve the attention it gets.
