In typical SGJ fashion, this novel makes you feel like you are sitting in a native American lodge listening to a traditional legend or tale being told by a tribal chief. Set on a northwestern reservation it follows the lives of four friends who find themselves struggling to marry their traditional upbringing with their modern sensibilities. At its heart it becomes a psychological thriller/horror story about how the choices you make in your youth could come back to haunt you when you're older.
The vibes were definitely spooky. Elk, who knew? Now I have something else to be terrified of. SGJ has a way of making you feel like you're right there with the characters on that reservation, dealing with poverty, addiction, and the elements. It gives me a continued appreciation of native American tradition and continued struggles.
The characters and their slow decline into insanity was done in a way akin to "The Shining". This was like an Indian Stephen King novel.
With overarching themes of : revenge, insanity, folklore, friendship, and suffering I would recommend this fans of slow burn psychological horror.
