I didn't know much about this book before I started other than what can be taken from the cover and blurb.
I was hoping for an easy read, crime fighting story with a little historical twist that was quite fast paced. That's not exactly what I got! (By the way of that is what you're after try The Shakespeare Secret)
The book starts out well enough, a few mysterious deaths all apparently predicted by a postcard arriving a few days earlier. You are introduced to little flashes of the past from 1947 and 777 to hint that something else is at play here. All ticking along quite nicely. Unfortunately things go down hill pretty quickly for me from the beginning-middle of the book.
The main character or hero of the book is too unlikable, a drunk who womanises and ruins the relationships and lives of seemingly everyone he meets, including his own. I have no interest in his family, past, relationships or if he wins. I found him quite arrogant and thought he could do with being taken down a peg or two. Not really how you should be feeling towards the character who technically should win in the end.
Then there is the 'twist' it was too unrealistic for me. Don't get me wrong I like a bit of fantasy/sci-fi. But not religion. Like God has some master plan here? Think I'll pass thanks.
You will pretty much figure out what's going on quite quickly before it's actually spelt out to you. It's spelt out around the middle off the book too (if you haven't figured it out by then) so it's not really what the end of the book is about. It's more about the chase, what happens next, how will it end of those involved.
I have the book three starts because it was actually an easy read and when I finally got into it I read the majority of the book in about two days. But the story line was two far fetched, I didn't care about the characters and there was no great twist or reveal for you. I probably will read the second book in the series though 'book of souls' but only because I'd already bought it.
