Mostly conversational, not an action packed read. I found it highly entertaining though, the writing style captivating even when little was happening. I wasn't expecting to like it based on very negative reviews from a few trusted reviewers, but I enjoyed every bit of it.

I enjoyed this book. Zuri was a great counterpart to Elizabeth - feisty and bull-headed and smart and funny. And, like Austen, Zoboi managed to blend the cultural commentary and romance in a way that was interesting and fun.

3.5 stars. This book was beautiful, but very heavy. I liked the first half much better, especially when Alice was younger. I think this book likely would have rated higher if I wasn't a sleep-deprived parent, but the lengthy flower descriptions were too much for my current state of mind. That being said, I would definitely like to give this another read one day!

The pacing was fantastic, the world and characters were intriguing, and the writing was solid.

3.5 star book for me. The plot was thought-provoking and complex, and the writing was generally great. But the entire middle section of the book was completely uninteresting to me. Everything between Carine and the letter could have been skipped and explained in a few sentences. The ending was also far too drawn out for me. I appreciate that there were many loose threads to pick up - many complicated emotions and conclusions for Anton to process - but it became monotonous. I think this book needed some serious editing.
