Loved the idea of this book - dystopian future in a fallen Toronto, with Afro-Carribean myth and magic at the forefront. But this was my second attempt, and I can't get into it. The visions Ti-Jeanne keeps having draw me in completely, and then the rest feels like a slog. If I weren't sleep-deprived I might have pushed through, it's a short book, but at this point in time I'd rather just move on. Going to pick up more Hopkinson in the future. Knowing this was a debut, I'm still confident that she is an author I will enjoy. 

Took a break for a while, and when I went to pick it back up found that I remember very little of what I read previously. It was fine, just not memorable. 

It just didn't go as deep as I wanted it to. It left very basic impressions of characters/feelings/situations, rather than meaningful explorations. 

Found the introduction so funny! Then lost interest very quickly. 

This was my second attempt in this series (previously read Dani Brown, and I didn't technically DNF but I mostly skimmed the end), and while I can totally understand why people love Hibbert, this series just isn't for me. Hibbert's books are cute and sweet and comforting without shying away from real world stuff. I wish I connected with them more!

The topic is something I'm very interested in, but the book itself wasn't successful in maintaining my interest because the delivery felt clunky. The information was presented in dense and chaotic bursts, which made it difficult to follow if you aren't already well-versed in Jewish history during Roman occupation. Yet somehow I get the feeling that if you were already knowledgeable about this topic, the book wouldn't necessarily give you anything new to think about. So I'm not sure who this is for. Perhaps that changes in later chapters, and if I weren't already exhausted taking care of a teething baby I would have pushed through, but I think I would rather just find other books discussing similar topics. 

I actually think this is a clever idea, and the meeting of Victorian principles and Draconic violence made SO MUCH SENSE. I enjoyed reading the book, but have been struggling to want to pick it up. I don't think about the characters or even really remember them until I'm reading it again. With so little reading time at this stage of life, I need to DNF it, but I hope to try again one day! 

Started reading through the library on my kobo, but this is a physical book read I think. I'll wait. 😊

DNF at 27%. I really like Ng's writing, but the characters and plot felt predictable and lacked depth. There were beautiful and insightful moments, but I decided to stop reading because I totally lost interest.  I don't think it's a bad book, and I can see why many people like it. It just wasn't for me, especially not right now.
