Ugh this was so good!! Such a cool way to take a trope that’s almost been beaten to death and then turn it into something new and interesting. And I just love Devon and Yaya as a couple 😩

Little Rot

Akwaeke Emezi

DID NOT FINISH: 35%

I should have checked the content warnings before I picked this up. I absolutely love Akwaeke Emezi and her writing, but this book deals with child sex trafficking, as well as triggering my religious trauma. THIS DOES NOT MEAN IT IS A BAD BOOK. I didn’t DNF because it was bad. I’m just not in a place that I can handle it right now. I hope to come back to it eventually though.

This book was a bit light on plot until the last 30% which is really not my thing, so I’m very surprised how much I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed these characters and their dynamics so much, which is good because frankly I found the plot to be a bit lacking. I feel like marketing it as a heist book is a tiny bit misleading, since there wasn’t as much heist activity as I was expecting. However, I really did love the characters and how wholesome the depiction of queerness and family dynamics was.

Overall, if you’re looking for a quick, fun, feel-good read, definitely pick this up. But if you’re looking for heist books like Six of Crows, it might be a bit disappointing.
