Having read both the Percy Jackson/Jason Grace Olympians series, and being underwhelmed by the "Red Pyramid" books, I approached this title with a bit of apprehension. As a lover of Greek and Roman mythology, it was easy to fall into the stories Riordan wove in his first two series. Although I had a small inkling of knowledge in regards to some of the Norse myths, I was impressed with the sheer amount of knowledge and legend Riordan put between the two pages. I particularly liked Magnus as a narrator, as he brought a little more edge and age to main character that Riordan's other heroes did not. Perhaps this is because Riordan is acknowledging the fact that his reader base is growing up with his stories and are looking for something a little more substantial. That said, I found some of the humor in the book - while typical of Riordan's style - to still be on the same level as some of his early writing; there seemed to be no aging with the audience in that regard.
I do hope that we see a bit of crossover between Magnus and Annabeth's secret lives as I found myself wondering how this timeline coincides with the Percy/Jason timelines of the other series. I can assume that this all happens concurrently given Annabeth's continued remarking to Magnus that he would be surprised by her own personal life. I hope this is fleshed out more in the coming books.
