I had to read this book for the name. :)
Overall, I was disappointed. Wiggin over-states the morals in the story, which is a little eye-rolly. Rebecca is similar to Anne in Anne of Green Gables, but this book was published first.
Even though we share a name...I'd say skip it and read Anne.

I started this book planning to feel underwhelmed, and I was surprised how much I liked it.
A girl lives by herself on an island for 18 years (based on Robinson Crusoe?). A lot of stuff happens and a lot of stuff doesn't. But I still kept reading. O'Dell's primitive descriptions made the book (namely, the main character) more realistic.
I feel it was deserving of the awards it received. Not my very favourite book, but it's well-written.

I read this in 4th grade or so, and I didn't get it.
The fact that the red fern shows up towards the end of book was really frustrating to elementary-aged Becca. I find it hilarious that I was looking for symbolism way back then. ;)

Classic.
