Solid four stars. I think if you lessen your expectations for this to be a scare fest and settle in to it being a mystery you’ll be quite satisfied and want to move into the series sequels

Not my favorite Murakami, but still good. Yes, he writes women blandly, yes he talks about breasts way too much, and yes, if you read too deep into his characters they can appear pretentious. But that doesn’t mean they’re bad or shallow necessarily. The man knows how to paint a picture and for a debut? It’s a pretty excellent example into what his work would evolve into as he developed as a writer.

I almost dnf this, it just felt kind of lacking in development or maybe just wasn’t my thing

personally, I love a book where I can’t trust any of the characters fully. It seems like it will be a promising series that hopefully fleshes out all of the characters a bit more. I understand why some might find it to be lacking, but for me it was a page turner.
