Absolutely fantastic.
It feels so weird to think about the fact that this series is over. It feels wrong to know that there aren't any other books left to read - that the story ends here. I'm such a long way from the first time I read the first book back in the 5th grade for a book report. I didn't know I'd end up reading the series in their entirety in my 20s and enjoy them so much.
This book had all the necessary aspects of a good ending to a series - twists and turns, lots of action, gratifying character cameos, moments of shock and mourning, and a happy (yet open?) ending. Ridley did well to bring back Dillard and Finn and possibility of returning Wayne to the parks. I love that there wasn't a kind of fairytale ending for the characters, yet still I teared up and smiled at their ending.
With the parallel timelines of the present and the past, the book felt like a non-stop fast-paced ride. It was a great build-up to the final two battles, which I could visualize perfectly.
Their last visit to the park was a perfect way to end their time as the Kingdom Keepers, and though so much has happened since the creation of the DHIs, they feel like the same people, the same characters that were introduced so long ago. Overall, I'd say I'm content with how this series ended and I HOPE HOPE HOPE they'll one day adapt it into a tv show. It would be sooooo good.

I liked this book. A lot. I had heard that people thought it was one of the better books written recently about a haunted house. And that it was - a really solid, spooky book about a scary house in Kansas. But it was also a great story about trauma, loss, and the darker side of people. About fame and glory and writing and horror as a genre. So there was a lot more to it than just a spooky story about a haunted house.
Thomas did a great job weaving a story that made you curious about the house itself and whatever was going on there, as well as keeping you invested in the main characters of the book. It was surprisingly dark at times, while still having some moments of levity. I think that makes a great horror story. That rollercoaster feeling you get throughout. The last quarter of the book felt like a full blown slasher/action movie, which is a treat when the majority of the book feels like a slow burn.
I am STILL thinking about the ending. It was a twist I did not see coming and it left my heart pounding. I have to give major props to the author for that. I would recommend this book to anyone who isn't afraid of a little gore, likes quirky (and somewhat dark) characters, and wants to be creeped out just enough. Not the scariest thing I've read, but was a perfect read for Halloween weekend.
