This book was my June BOTM pick. I'm not a huge fan of fantasy but I'm so glad I read this!  I loved the interwoven legends/stories and all the magic. The only thing I disliked was that two women who have grown up fighting seem to have just as much skill as a prince who has never had a day of training in his life. Other than that, it was a great read and I look forward to the next two books!

Beautifully melancholic. Poetically detailed prose. I love stories with non-linear timelines and multiple viewpoints that come together in the end. My only complaint is that it was very slow-paced and boring at times.

This book felt like a half-baked fanfiction, which is probably why it was so confusing and nonsensical. The science was not science-ing, and the magic did not magic. All Holly does is work, worry, lie, repeat. Oh, and sleep with every man shortly after meeting them. Peter wasn't in the book all that much, and Holly's romance with Chris was unconvincing. The ending felt rushed and the climax happens offscreen! I would have DNFed this book if it wasn't against my religion to DNF books.

What a brilliant and lovely book! One of my new favorites! Very detailed. I was surprised to learn that this is the author's first novel.

Strong character development: Yes

There was less magic and more politics in this book than I thought there would be, but the politics weren’t tedious and I really enjoyed the magic and mythology that was in it!
