This book was sweet and emotional. It touches on the wartime atrocities the characters faced without being intense and graphic, and instead focuses on the bonds they made in that time. It also develops all the characters really nicely, with aspects of their personality showing in flares of emotion and the choices they make.
I found the magical element of the book interesting, and I wish it had been more developed, although it also made sense for the plot that it wasn't that well understood. I'm interested to see how the author continues the story in the remainder of the trilogy, especially as the relationship in the novel was brought to a fairly tidy conclusion.
