A Well Trained Wife: My Escape from Christian Patriarchy

Tia Levings

It was too emotionally fraught for me. I just couldn't keep listening.

After the Death of Don Juan

Sylvia Townsend Warner

DID NOT FINISH: 13%

I thought reading a summary of Don Juan would be enough for me to understand this book but not only was it not, it's also referencing a whole series of intersecting cultures that I don't understand. I can see a brilliant novel through the mist of my ignorance, but I unfortunately will not be getting to experience it.

Wolf Hall

I'm sure it's a wonderful read if you're more knowledgeable about Thomas Cromwell.

The Year of Less: How I Stopped Shopping, Gave Away My Belongings, and Discovered Life is Worth More Than Anything You Can Buy in a Store

Cait Flanders

The introduction is filled with fatphobia. It is directed at the author themselves but regardless was not pleasant to hear about.

The Orchid and the Dandelion: Why Some Children Struggle and How All Can Thrive

W. Thomas Boyce

DID NOT FINISH: 7%

The way the author, at least in the first chapter, seemed to not recognise some obvious explanations for why he was a dandelion and his sister was an orchid was a bit suspicious to me. Could very well be that he explains this in later chapters, but he also seems to heavily romanticise mental illness and creativity was pretty gross too.

But I mainly stopped reading because we were only two chapters in and he'd already mentioned vomiting twice which was triggering my ementaphobia. Not worth it.

Gomorrah: Italy's Other Mafia

Roberto Saviano

There was nothing particularly wrong with the book - it just wasn't what I was expecting it to be and I wasn't interested in what it was.

I Love Poetry

Michael Farrell

DID NOT FINISH

The form and style of poetry just didn't connect with me in any meaningful way. I couldn't understand what the poet was getting at with each poem and it all seemed nonsense to me. Not necessarily badly written poetry but definitely not for me.

Blindness and Rage

Brian Castro

DID NOT FINISH

I read seven cantos before quitting. I just didn't find the story particularly interesting and the form wasn't adding any interest to it either.
