This book was an emotional ride - I think it had just the right amount of sadness as we accompanied Ally, Lilith, Nadine and Luna across multiple generations and continents. Set between Germany, Cuba, and the US.
I found myself constantly wondering if I could make a decision like Ally and Lilith had to. I don’t know that I could. But then again, I was never in that scenario, so I’m not sure what I would do to ensure my children’s survival. These decisions were so sad and it made me feel like life has no rhyme or reason - you get dealt the hand you get.
I loved the story coming full circle - I couldn’t believe the ending. Franz’s betrayal shook me though. I was not expecting that - him staying alive so many years… he seemed like a tortured soul and that he regretted his decisions. I understand Luna and Nadine keeping Elizabeth from Lilith, but that was sad to me. Yes, Lilith was old, but can you imagine knowing you had a half sibling out there? Although, maybe she would be upset by the news- she didn’t know Franz was such a monster, that news was never communicated from Ally to Lilith.
