I don't understand why people drop $3 on a short story only to turn around and complain about the length of the story. HELLO Laurell makes it very clear that this Dearies is a short story a novella a little something to hold us over during the year or so that we wait for the next Anita book. I REALLY like Nathainel and Micah and had no issues dropping $3 for this fix. It's a nice story showing them in a "normal" setting. No gun fights, no crazy orgies, no psycho enemy. This is proof that Anita has a life outside of the adventures. It makes her and her boys more real. It also shows how uncomfortable social settings can be for everyone human or otherwise. I wished that LKH did more novella's between books.
If I could go back and re-read Gillian Flynn's books I would have read this one first. Followed by Gone Girl then Dark Places. The reason being all three books to me were great reads. But Dark Places for me was such an emotional read, it was so shocking and things were so unexpected that it set the bar really high for the next two. With that said. This book was still a very good read. The characters were dark/complex. A part of you doesn't want to believe that their behavior is real. You are telling yourself this could never happen in real life. But then you turn on the news and it's very much believable and sick. I feel like this book was somewhat predictable for me. I'm not sure if it's because I'm a little obsessive with True Crime documentaries or Law and Order marathons but even with having a strong inkling of who did what I still enjoyed reading how everything played out and did receive a few gut wrentching bombs at the end. I like that Flynn doesn't tie everything up at the end of her books. I like that these people are still broken and justice isn't always found. I am very excited to see the movies for the other two books this fall and hope that this one follows suit as well.
