At a yoga class in the community centre, we lie on our backs with arms and legs in the air, and the teacher tells us it is ‘grounding’. I’ve never understood what this means, just like I’ve never understood why ‘down to earth’ is a compliment. I’m slamming into stone. I’m reaching a halt.

The club retains many of its industrial fittings, and as I climb the steel staircase to the main room – the old turbine room with a high ceiling and concrete floor – the noise hits me. The immense volume of the music creates a full-body experience. I can feel it in my eardrums, my stomach and bowels and through the soles of my feet. It makes my chest throb. It’s loud enough to swim in.
