Plot or Character Driven: Character

I enjoyed this book, though it took me awhile to get into. It had a very slow start, but once it picked up its pace for me, it had me.

I enjoyed getting to learn about the characters. Darlington, Turner, Dawes and of course, Alex. The transitions between the past and present were really well done. Normally I hate the transitions because I just want to know what happens in one storyline, but they were well done and relevant. Getting to see Alex's relationships with her peers develop in each storyline (Darlington in the past, and Dawes in the present) were interesting, and I was a big fan of seeing the friendship between Dawes and Alex.

The dynamic between Turner and Alex was really entertaining, and North even grew on me.

Overall, a slow plot but really interesting characters that make up for it.

I really thought I wouldn't like this because the title is a spoiler, but I was so intrigued. I really enjoyed meeting the characters, and seeing the loyalty of the friendships both the main characters had. I also really enjoyed seeing how their relationship developed in the matter of a single day.

This was a nice, easy and solid read. Emotionally devastating though.

I did enjoy reading this book, but it did not feel like a whole lot happened in it and most of the characters annoyed me a lot of the time. I will say that a character I previously really didn't like ended up being one of my favourites in this one, so that was a plus.

I do plan to read the next one because I am anxious to see what happens.

This is one of the most adorable and fun reads I’ve read in a long time.

A short book, but it was so fast paced and fun to read.

I didn’t see a couple of the plot twists coming and I pretty much finished this in one sitting because I had to know what happened.

A very cozy read and one I recommend. I’ll definitely be checking out more from the author.

This was a nice easy read. I loved the different take on vampires and I was intrigued as we learned about the world and the rules of it.

I’m not a big fan of open ended endings, so it missed there for me but that’s a personal preference.

I also didn’t really see much chemistry in the romance and it felt like it came out of nowhere.

I enjoyed the atmosphere. It felt very dark and melancholic.

Overall, a good read.
slow-paced

This wasn't a bad book, it just wasn't for me.

It felt like a lot of sections had nothing but info dumping and the plot barely moved. I also found it overwhelming and hard to understand (which is also just a sign it wasn't for me.)

I really wanted to like it because it's one of my husband's favourite books but I really struggled with it. I was really bored for a lot of it, and found it hard to push through reading.

The characters themselves were really interesting though, and I enjoyed seeing the dynamic between some of them. The writing itself was really good. The beginning was also really strong and intriguing.

I will definitely try more Stephenson books because I liked the writing, and I've heard that other books are better.

Plot or Character Driven: Character

This felt like such a nice and cozy read. It was a refreshing break from a lot of other books I tend to read. Though the main character was frustrating at times, she was likeable. Though my favourite character was probably Lady Rivenna.

I loved the banter between Iris and Jasvian and seeing their dynamic change throughout the book was really fun.

I also enjoyed seeing some genuine women friendships.

It was a really good read. I found the ending a little abrupt and I would have liked a little more closure but I liked it and will definitely check out more from the author.

I really enjoyed this book. This was a book pick for an indie book club I’m in and I’m so glad it was suggested.

It starts off really strong and gets my attention. I love the main character and I love the dragon in this. The banter in this book was fun to read.

I did struggle a bit in the middle because it was really slow but we still learned so many interesting things about the world and characters. And then in the last little bit of the book, so much happened so quickly. I am so ready for the next one.
slow-paced

This book started off so good. After the opening, I was so excited to read on and thought it might be a 5 star read for me. I was so intrigued, and the creepiness and mystery was so well done in the beginning. And then, it lost me.

I also found it really repetitive in a lot of the stuff it was saying. Specifically about the main character's feelings about the invasion. I was tired of her inner monologue.

I also felt like while this book did have a strong message, it didn't execute it well. Maybe it was just me, but I found that it was really slow at points and then the ending just threw a whole bunch at you and I was honestly just confused at what was happening. I'm still not 100% clear on it.

The concept itself was really interesting, and the writing was also really well done. Overall, a good book, just probably not for me.

Also, what happened to the cat?! Did she even try and go for it? It was mentioned so many times.
funny lighthearted medium-paced

This book was a satisfying ending to the series.

I remember not being sure I could continue the series after the first book, but I’m glad I did. The characters were the best part and I love the morally grey aspect.

Tory and Darcy were such strong main characters and I love seeing their sister relationship. While they had some conflict, overall their bond shines through and it was beautiful to read.

I think Caleb and Max were really fun to read. Both of their love interests and how those relationships develop was an amazing journey.

Seth annoyed me so much but then he grew on me. Which I think is probably the intention since I think that’s how a lot of characters felt about him too.

Geraldine also annoyed me but she’s so lovable because she’s so wholesome. Definitely a small doses type of person, but her loyalty from the very beginning has my heart. And her bravery was phenomenal.

I didn’t really care for the Xavier storyline, though I did love some poly representation.

There was a lot of cheesy stuff but that’s not a bad thing. And honestly, I like it. So many books I read are so dark and I enjoy it but it’s nice to have a change of pace and some silliness and cheesy moments.

This would have been five stars but I found the middle hard to get through because I was bored.
